Hong Kong // Umbrella revolution (2014)

September 22, 2014 a classmate asked me to join a kick-off for a student strike in Hong Kong where I was on a exchange semester. I joined, hoping to snap some photos for my photojou rnalism course. In the next couple of weeks the strike escalated into a occupation of the biggest roads in the centre of Hong Kong. This was already planned by the movement Occupy Central but escalated further into the movement today known as Umbrella Revolution. The name came from the protection people used as police would attack with pepper spray against people with umbrella as their only cover. Students and grownups spent the nights in the streets and spent most of their day in protest. This, to claim democracy and the right to vote for their leaders, without China deciding the candidates.

An estimated 13 000 student gathered at Chinese university in Hong Kong to support the student strike to demand democratic elections in the territ
ory. This was the very first gathering, the kick off to the university srike that would later end u in Occupy Central and the Umbrella Revolution.

The occupation of several areas of Hong Kongs roads went on from September to December 2014. The occupation was done by the citizens of Hong Kong derby many students, skipping class to live in the street. Some brought their books and studies while protesting. People would hold speeches about their agenda and democracy, and to keep the spirit up among the protesters.
